Construction Forecasters Predict Building Downturn Accelerating in 2002
Typically, the construction sector is a harbinger for the rest of the economy. Being a cyclical industry, construction grows rapidly when the economy begins to expand, and declines when the economy begins to weaken. Tadao Ando, Hon. FAIA, Awarded 2002 Gold Medal
The AIA Board of Directors selected Japanese architect Tadao Ando, Hon. FAIA, to receive the 2002 AIA Gold Medal award. The highest honor the AIA confers to an individual, the Gold Medal recognizes an individual whose significant body of work has had a lasting influence on the theory and practice of architecture. Thompson, Ventulett, Stainback & Associates Wins Firm Award
The AIA Board of Directors on December 6 named the Atlanta firm Thompson, Ventulett, Stainback & Associates, Inc., as recipient of the 2002 AIA Architecture Firm Award. The annual award, the highest honor the AIA confers on an architecture firm, recognizes a practice that has produced distinguished architecture consistently for at least 10 years. Full Story

Auditors Give AIA Clean Bill of Health
The AIA's financial picture brightened considerably at the end of the third quarter. First, PricewaterhouseCoopers, the AIA's auditors, issued a clean bill of health for the AIA in its 2000 audit, which shows the AIA net asset position much better than is required by the financial plan adopted by the Institute's Board of Directors in May 2001. The AIA's audited balance sheet for 2000 shows the Institute's total net assets of negative $1.4 million, a significant improvement from the auditor's worst-case projection in May of negative $4.4 million. Second, projected net income for 2001 will be higher than budgeted: 2001 projections show a total net income in 2001 of more than $2 million. Full Story
