European, American Architects Seek Mutual Recognition
With an eye toward reciprocal recognition of professional licensure in the U.S. and European Union, representatives from the AIA, Architect’s Council of Europe (ACE), and National Council of Architectural Registration Boards (NCARB) ceremonially signed an Accord on Cooperation and Professionalism in Architecture December 6 in Washington, D.C. Marvin J. Malecha, FAIA, Awarded 2003 AIA/ACSA Topaz Medallion
Architect and educator, Marvin J. Malecha, FAIA, dean of the College of Design at NC State University, Raleigh, received the 2003 Topaz Medallion for Excellence in Architectural Education from the AIA and the Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture. He is honored for his outstanding contributions to architecture education and for teaching that has shaped the minds of those who will shape our environment. Full Story

Miller/Hull Partnership Receives 2003 AIA Architecture Firm Award
The AIA Board of Directors on December 6 named the Miller/Hull Partnership (Miller/Hull), Seattle, as recipient of the 2003 AIA Architecture Firm Award. Full Story

AIA New York State Honors Nine Projects, Eight Individuals
Special citations for September 11 rebuilding efforts
The AIA New York State, Inc. (AIANYS), the state organization of AIA, presented its 2002 excellence in design awards at the association’s annual convention October 11 at the celebrated Albright-Knox Art Gallery in Buffalo. From 108 entries, the jury chose to present four Awards for Excellence in Design, two Awards of Merit, and three Citations. Full Story

Steel Compares Well to the Trusty 2x4
Cold-formed steel (CFS) elements for housing are beginning to get noticed in the U.S., Canada, Australia, Japan, and Korea, according to a September 2002 HUD publication that details the fire-resistance and acoustic considerations of CFS-supported systems. In performance, the steel compares favorably to wood studs, joists, rafters, and channels. Full Story

Report Your AIA/CES by the End of the Year
To meet your AIA Continuing Education System requirement, you must have reported your 18 total learning-unit hours (8 of which are required in health, safety, and welfare topics) to the AIA/CES site by December 31.
