PROJECT WATCH
When Is a Bank More than a Bank?
Behnisch & Behnisch combine striking form with energy conservation in mixed-use bank building in Hanover
The newly completed, cantilevered, and courtyarded Norddeutsche Landesbank (known as "Nord/LB") by Behnisch, Behnisch & Partner Inc. of Stuttgart and Venice, Calif., aspires to become the new commercial and social hub of its Hanover, Germany, neighborhood. The 23-story complex is now home base for 1,500 employees who previously worked in 16 different branches scattered throughout the city. The building's lower floors, accessible to the public, house restaurants, retail space, galleries, and a landscaped courtyard. In addition to its striking form, Nord/LB employs many energy-saving devices to reduce carbon dioxide, control exhaust air, and optimize daylight. The upper-floor offices do not require airconditioning, thanks to an earth/air heat exchanger in the building's foundation that takes cool air from underground and distributes it via the floor slabs. Additionally, the external sun shades incorporate devices to redirect sunlight so that it can be used without typical glare problems. The project has captured the Lower Saxony State Prize for Architecture for "enhancing the built environment." (Photo © Christian Kandzia)

The hill into which Taliesin nestles is shifting, causing extensive damage to its walls, walkways, and patios. Full Story
