Fort Worth Honors Seven Projects in the Great State of Texas
2003 Excellence in Architecture Awards
recognize hometown architects and buildings
A jury of Laura Hartman, Berkeley; Juan Miro, AIA, Austin; and Donald
Frank Gatzke, AIA, New Orleans, selected seven projects to be recipients
of AIA Fort Worth’s 2003 design awards. Civic and cultural
projects topped Fort Worth’s list of winners this year and
include a museum expansion, ballpark, two theater additions, and
a natatorium. The jury also selectd four students, all from the
University of Texas at Arlington, to receive awards. The winners
will receive their awards at the chapter’s annual gala December
4.
NCARB to Revamp ARE Exam
The National Council of Architectural Registration Boards announces
that it will make changes in the Architect Registration Examination
(ARE) in February 2004, based on findings from its Architectural
Practice Analysis Study conducted during the year 2000. The
new ARE Version 3.0 acts upon study recommendations that increase
the exam’s relevancy, according to NCARB, and while it is
not a major overhauling of the exam, “it is an effort to include
more recent topics while adjusting the emphasis of focus in other
areas.”
AIA
Member Retains Seat as Seattle City Council President; Other Architects
Elected to Local Offices
In Washington, Peter Steinbrueck, AIA, retained his seat
on the Seattle City Council, where he currently serves as its president.
In San Mateo, Calif., John Matthews Jr., AIA, was elected to the
city council, while Peter Brown, FAIA, is heading into a run-off
election December 6 for a seat on the Houston City Council. In news
from Ohio, voters sent Tom McCash, AIA, back to his seat on the
Dublin City Council. Lane Beougher, AIA, who ran as a write-in for
Reynoldsburg mayor, was unsuccessful but retains his council seat.
Bernie Scanlon, AIA, withdrew from the Grandview City Council race
due to health issues. AIArchitect
will continue to post election results as they become known.
New Masonry Group to Encourage Women’s
Leadership
Reinforcing the 2003 AIA Firm Survey’s report of the extensive
growth of women and minorities into management
positions in architecture firms, six women have founded the
National Association for Women in Masonry (NAWM). Designed to enhance
the skills of women professionals in architecture and related construction
fields, the Seattle-based group serves as the NAWM’s flagship
chapter and hopes to inspire women in other states to form additional
chapters. They are striving to admit 100 members within their first
year and envision more than 20 chapters and 1,000 members by 2014.

Gensler
Brings American Girl Place®

American Girl Place® New York, a new 43,000-square-foot
retail and entertainment destination designed by Gensler—Architecture,
Design & Planning Worldwide, opened November 8 in New
York’s Rockefeller Center area on the corner of 49th Street
and Fifth Avenue. Every design detail of the store’s five
floors immerses visitors in the experience of the enormously popular
American Girl dolls, books, clothes, and accessories aimed at girls
age 3 to 12. The store includes boutiques, a cafe, and a theater
on the first three floors and mezzanine, with office and support
functions on the fifth and basement levels.
Your Kiplinger Connection (members
only)
The economy: Don’t fret the
GDP growth drop to 4.5 percent this quarter (and 3.5 in the next),
because this recovery will continue steady through 2004. The job
market will grow significantly, but not for home builders. Tech
and telecom: Private-sector spin-offs from guided-missile
technology are giving us improvements in security monitors, ultrasound
vibration detectors, 3D imaging, and more. Trade:
Cuba as a market is still years away. The road with China is getting
rocky. Investors worry about Russia’s direction.
AIArchitect offers AIA members exclusive access to three
stories a week to help them manage their practices and plan for
the coming year. Nonmembers
may subscribe to The Kiplinger Letter.

BEST
PRACTICES (members only)
Legal Structure of Architecture Firms
Whether you choose to incorporate your firm and how is a matter
of personal choice within the options offered by state law and has
ramifications that run the gamut from personal liability, where
you can practice, and how you pay taxes to growth potential and
firm transition. Drawn from Architect’s
Essentials of Starting a Design Firm and The
Architect’s Handbook of Professional Practice is this
brief primer on a topic that is as important to know about as it
can be complex.
Greenguard Identifies
Certified Low-e Products and Materials
As clients increasingly request technologies friendly to both environment

Washington, D.C.-based nonprofit organization, is stepping up with
scientific, third-party-vetted information to establish environmental
standards for interiors and building materials. The independent
organization says its certification and labeling program is the
only testing program worldwide for low-emitting products.
