BOOK REVIEW
Patterns of Home: The Ten Essentials of Enduring Design
Back in school, we were absolutely awed by Christopher Alexander's A Pattern Language; so much so that we spent days traipsing around our converted warehouse of a school and its surround searching for evidence of "patterns." With more than 200 patterns at our disposal, even we students had no trouble finding them. The reason for the immense appeal is that the patterns were Truth—they were architecture theory in the flesh for us. They also offered a way to crack the code, to pull single threads out of the complicated tapestry of what we were trying so hard to figure out: how you design firm, commodious, and delightful buildings. Chicago Competition Highlights Accessible, Universal Design
A winning entry by 3D Design Group LLP in a design competition in Chicago emphasizes the idea that accessible housing need not be a planning afterthought. FROM OUR FRIENDS IN AIA ARIZONA
Chapter Moves into Historic Building
AIA Arizona is now proud to call the J. W. Walker Building in downtown Phoenix home. The 1920 Neoclassical building, constructed by local real-estate developer J. W. Walker, was planned as an eight-story high rise, but only two floors were ever built. Directly across from Phoenix City Hall, the Walker Building stands out against the backdrop of a new modern municipal courthouse. In disrepair and almost demolished in 1996; the Walker Building was the beneficiary of a $1.5 million exterior restoration by the city.
The design for tenant improvement is by Mark Roddy, AIA, and Jorge Colon, AIA. AIA Arizona has joined forces with Phoenix's ArtLink to offer a revolving installation in the building's entryway gallery. The first exhibit, opening November 1, features a timeline documenting the history of the building, Phoenix architecture, and the AIA in Arizona.
