Capture 2003 Business Week/Architectural
Record Awards
Architect/client collaborations once again
prove that “good design is good business.”
The Business Week/Architectural Record
Awards (BW/AR) recognize those
projects that successfully employ architecture to achieve business
objectives. This year’s 10 recipients cover an extraordinary
range of project scope and cost, from a copy/imaging center to a
renovated landmark tower, from a retail flagship to a ladies’
private clinic. At the core, all 10 projects recognize the real
value of good design.
Some Pointers for Citizen Architects
AIA members have entered Seattle’s political milieu in a big
way. The component counts among its members a bevy of candidates
for public office this fall, including Peter Steinbrueck, AIA, first
elected to the Seattle City Council in 1997, now seeking his third
term. Steinbrueck explains that he received many of his life lessons
in architecture and activism from his father, Victor Steinbrueck,
FAIA, one of the city’s most respected architects and advocates
of historic preservation.

Maryland Lauds Bumper Crop of Beautiful Buildings
The AIA Maryland Annual Design Award Competition, held each September,
yielded a fine harvest this year of award-winning buildings that
range from a maintenance yard for city vehicles to a very modest
and beautiful private residence. The jury, from the AIA Northeastern
Pennsylvania Chapter, presented the architects from the Free State
with three honor awards, four merit awards, seven citations, and
a Public Building of the Year Award. The honorees received their
accolades at the Society's Design Awards Banquet in College Park,
Md., September 25.
National
Associates Committee, ArchVoices Release 2003 Internship and Career
Survey Report
Survey examines internship, career experiences,
and registration pursuits
The AIA’s National Associates Committee (NAC) and ArchVoices,
a nonprofit think tank on architecture education and internship,
released the 2003 Internship and Career
Survey Report on October 17. The two groups worked together
to conduct, compile, and analyze this survey to “better inform
the profession’s understanding of this important period in
the lifelong professional development of architects.”
A Mold Primer for Architects
Our blissful ignorance of indoor mold and other microbial contaminants
is about to end, says Certified Microbial Remediation Supervisor
Neil B. Hall, PhD, AIA, PE. Public interest is growing. Politicians
are taking interest. Codes are changing. Architecture is being argued
not in design studios but rather in courtrooms. Even before indoor
mold, headlines about Legionnaire’s Disease, formaldehyde,
and tobacco smoke changed the way people began to look at indoor
environments. The quest for healthy bodies became the paradigm for
healthy buildings. What can you do about it? Read on!

WATCH
Southfield Library Enters a New Chapter,
Thanks to Phillips Swager
The new city library of Southfield, Mich., a striking three-story
glass tower, serves as a welcoming grand entry to patrons and a
symbolic beacon of knowledge for the community. Library staff turned
to Phillips Swager Associates, Dallas, to undertake a needs assessment
and develop a detailed program for a replacement facility. In the
first three months since the library opened, circulation has increased
65 percent, library card registration is up by 300 percent, and
computer use has improved 150 percent.

BEST
PRACTICES (members only)
Eight Pillars of Traditional Design
In his just-published book, Creating
a New Old House, Russell Versaci, AIA, writes that he uses
eight design principles from the old ways of building to weave “yesterday’s
character,” as he calls it, into today’s home.
Honor

Celebrate World Town Planning Day in your neck of the woods! Organizers
say 30 countries on four continents are scheduling events on or
close to November 8 that recognize and promote the role of planning
in creating livable communities. The programs, sponsored in the

the American Institute of Certified Planners, revolve around three

DOE
Releases Energy Design Guidelines for High-Performance Schools
Information organized by regional climate
types
The Department of Energy released several new volumes of its Energy
Design Guidelines for High Performance Schools. The titles are divided
by regional climates and so far include design strategies for cold
and humid climates, cool and dry climates, hot and dry climates,
temperate and humid climates, and temperate and mixed climates.
Also forthcoming is artic/subarctic and tropical climates. DOE’s
Rebuild America team developed the Guidelines from two years of
discussions about best energy-savings processes with architects,
school administrators, teachers, developers, and others with a stake
in school design. Each volume is replete with case studies, checklists,
and photographs. Downloadable
versions are available on the Web or free on CD-ROM by calling
252-459-4664 or send
an e-mail.
The same Web page also offers DOE’s National Best Practices
Manual for Building High Performance Schools, written specifically
for architects and engineers.
