  NCARB Increases Grants to Bring Professional Practice into the Classroom

Summary: To further encourage the integration of professional practice and design education, NCARB is increasing the amount of their annual grant program from $10,000 to $25,000. These funds will be distributed to one, two, or three grant winners.


NCARB is looking for education programs that bring non-faculty architects into classrooms in innovative ways and stretch the boundaries of contemporary architecture education. Past NCARB grant winners have been the University of Kansas, which proposed an initiative to teach sustainability concepts through each of the five styles of cognitive learning. The University of New Mexico won a grant to develop a series of professional-level courses for advanced students, interns, and practicing professionals that dealt with the most critical gaps between practice and education. Schools are encouraged to examine the 2007 Practice Analysis of Architecture for guidance on developing grant-worthy programs.

Programs that are accredited by the National Architectural Accrediting Board (NAAB) and programs that are candidates for NAAB-accreditation are encouraged to submit proposals for new for-credit initiatives that integrate practice and education in the academy.

Grant applications are due on Oct. 20. More information is available at NCARB.org.
