Greetings from the Grassroots Leadership Conference in D.C.
As has become a tradition, members of the AIA Executive Committee, the Council of Architectural Component Executives (CACE) Executive Committee, and AIA national staff send you greetings from the nation’s capital as they assemble to launch the 2009 Grassroots Leadership and Legislative Conference on February 4 with a wave and salute to the AIA members they serve. The annual conference brings together people from the many parts of the AIA to share their specialized knowledge and work toward common goals. AIArchitect will bring you updated highlights from the Grassroots conference this week and next.
Thriving Despite Recession
Eight-person Memphis firm on track for “best year ever”
While many design firms are planning layoffs and wondering how they’ll survive the year, Memphis’s Architecture Inc., is expecting to have its best year ever. They have approximately $200 million of work on the boards, thanks to a diverse and flexible practice, and a little common sense, too.
Eleven Tapped for Honorary AIA Membership
Please join us in welcoming 11 very special people into the AIA family. Despite disparate roles, they all are people who, although not architects by profession, have offered distinguished service to the profession of architecture or the allied arts and sciences and thus have made all of our lives richer. One of the most important messages we share is our gratitude toward those who support and uplift architects and architecture; in this spirit, the Institute is very pleased to bestow on these individuals the title of Honorary AIA.

AIA President Malecha Sounds a Call to Action
Your profession needs your participation in the Rebuild and Renew plan
Throughout last year, AIA members have been sharing ideas about how to use the talent of this profession to advance a broad agenda that will enhance the quality of life of our communities and at the same time help jumpstart the economy, notes AIA President Marvin Malecha, FAIA. The unprecented collaboration has generated an ambitious advocacy campaign called “Rebuild and Renew.” The AIA’s plan is the only plan out there that embraces all the building types that architects design and is the only plan designed to put architects back to work on behalf of our communities. “As AIA members, we have a unique opportunity in having a say in how this nation’s short- and long-term future pans out,” Malecha says. Let him tell you more about it and how you can help. Watch the video.
It’s the Economy, Architect! The Newly Updated Career Center
To help AIA members through these tough economic times, the AIA has totally revamped the Institute’s online Career Center, making it easier for job seekers and employers alike to find mutually beneficial employment opportunities—through not only fulltime jobs, but also contracting possibilities and outsourcing arrangements. Job seekers in architecture and related fields may post résumés confidentially and search opportunities for free; employers now have a new range of posting opportunities and schedules and fees available. Access the Career Center from the bottom of the AIArchitect home page, the AIA Home page or here.
