Security Officials Acknowledge Role of Design
Prevention, rather than reaction, was the message July 25–26 at the AIA national component headquarters as the National Institute for Building Sciences convened a high-level workshop, "Vulnerability of Buildings to Chemical, Biological, and Radiological Attacks." The two-day workshop pointed up the real threats government officials acknowledge and the preventive steps—from obvious to arcane—that building designers can take to mitigate the threat from airborne poisons and pathogens. WTC Developers to Issue an Open RFQ August 19
The Lower Manhattan Development Corporation (LMDC) and the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey announced an open request for qualifications to be issued August 19 and extended to the most innovative architects and planners in New York City and around the world, reports Fredric Bell, FAIA, executive director of the AIA New York Chapter. Firms are invited to participate in an LMDC design study regarding the future of the World Trade Center site. Full Story

PROJECT WATCH
New Haven School Renovation Captures Golden Trowel Award
Congratulations to Svigals + Partners, New Haven, whose local Edgewood School just received a Golden Trowel Award from the International Masonry Institute, honoring exceptional achievement in masonry design and construction. The award singles out this K-8 Arts Magnet School, the first project in New Haven's $1.1 billion School Construction Initiative, which revitalized and expanded a 1911 school. The Golden Trowel Awards for New England are slated to be presented August 17 in Boston.

New AIA Documents for U.S. Architects Consulting Internationally
Two contract documents for use by U.S. architects hired on a consulting basis on projects in foreign lands have been added to the suite of existing standard contract documents available from the AIA. Full Story
