NIBS Appoints Henry Green as President/CEO

Summary: Henry L. Green, Hon. AIA, will take the reins from David Harris, FAIA, as the next president and CEO of the National Institute of Building Sciences, announced NIBS Board Chair Ronald L. Skaggs, FAIA, on June 24. Harris, who has served in the position since 1988, announced his retirement earlier this year.

“Henry Green is an outstanding choice as the Institute’s next president,” Skaggs said. “He has served in a variety of voluntary positions at NIBS, including its board chairman in 2002 and 2003. His consensus-building skills and his knowledge of the building industry and the building process are unparalleled. His proven executive leadership and management abilities are well suited to our needs and his background with NIBS will enable him to hit the ground running.”

Just this year, the AIA named Green an honorary AIA member in recognition of his decades-long career in the building sciences, including his work from 1989 to present as executive director of the Bureau of Construction Codes for the State of Michigan.

“Henry Green has been a skillful consensus builder in the building codes and standards arena and a perpetual advocate for bringing architects into leadership roles,” said AIA Executive Vice President/CEO Christine McEntee. “His leadership and his expansive ties to the design professions and building industry will undoubtedly continue the strong working relationship that continues to evolve among the AIA, NIBS, and all organizations involved in the built environment.”

"I am pleased the NIBS Board of Directors has selected me to serve in this important capacity,” Green said. “The work NIBS performs is work that I have subscribed to achieve throughout my career because it improves our building industry. I am looking forward to a long and thriving relationship with the NIBS Board of Directors, its members, and the industry."

Working together for the public good
Established in 1974, NIBS is a nonprofit, nongovernmental organization that brings together representatives of government, the professions, industry, labor, and consumer interests to identify and resolve building process and facility performance problems.

As a volunteer, Green has served as the president of the International Code Council (ICC) and president of one of ICC’s legacy organizations, the Building Officials and Code Administrators, International. His contributions and accomplishments have been widely recognized by numerous awards and honors from a host of building industry organizations. Among these are a member award for outstanding service from NIBS last year and recognition by the U.S. House of Representatives for his significant contributions to public safety and awareness.

“I couldn’t be happier for NIBS and for Henry,” said retiring President Harris. “He is highly respected by the staff and by leaders of the building community. He is well known to the sectors of the building industry we have traditionally worked with, and he is innovative and anxious to reach out to work with new sectors to help improve other parts of our vast industry. And there will be no learning curve with Henry, as he is very knowledgeable about our industry, and he thoroughly understands NIBS’ councils and programs.”
