Walter J. Hainsfurther, AIA

This is an exciting time to be an architect and an AIA member. For the first time since I began practicing architecture, a discussion involving our profession is at the forefront of public opinion. Utilizing our credibility and the voice of more than 80,000 members, we have the opportunity to create a better world by advocating for:

  • A more sustainable built environment—we must continue to develop tools and knowledge resources that deliver on the promise of the “Walk the Walk” campaign
  • Attainable housing for every American—it is within our ability to ensure that everyone has shelter
  • New facilities for our aging society—the number of older Americans will grow exponentially, and we must be proactive in designing appropriate environments
  • Diversity—we must encourage diversity within our profession, which will keep us relevant, and within our communities, which will make them stronger.

We are also on the verge of a transformation of the Institute. Leadership is committed to making the AIA one of the more remarkable associations in the country, a more member-focused organization, where products and services align with your needs. To maximize our potential we must:

  • Deliver high-value services and products to members
  • Allow members to access those services through a variety of methods
  • Utilize the power of “One AIA”
  • Develop strategic alliances that benefit members.

We must utilize the voices of our individual members, building upon the foundations of the last 150 years to create an even more sustainable future.

I look forward to working with you to make our collective dreams a reality.
