Stephen K. Loos, AIA

At Grassroots, I conveyed my perception of the Institute Secretary’s importance, as I believe that the office is uniquely positioned and empowered to advance significantly both the Institute’s mission and its methods.

As to mission, the Secretary sets the tone for the Institute’s deliberations by helping to establish its priorities and its agenda. As Secretary, I will stress our priorities of delivering member value, exploring the architect’s evolving role, fostering emerging professionals as our future, and becoming an even more exceptional association. I intend to utilize my position on the Board and the Executive Committee to maintain our unwavering commitment to our strategic initiatives:

  • Sustainability as an integral component of design excellence
  • Integrated project delivery as our best assurance of practice excellence
  • Diversity as our primary means of service excellence to society.

As to methods, I see the Secretary’s role as utilizing our rules, procedures, and ethical standards to establish a culture of equitable, honorable, and respectful treatment of our fellow professionals, our components, and the public. I want the Secretary’s leadership role in communications to be a powerful tool to unite and move our Institute forward. I want the Secretary’s focus on governance, policy review, and organizational clarity to help move the board to become a more effective, strategically engaged, and deliberative body.

We have been favored with numerous outstanding, dedicated Secretaries who have made great contributions to the Institute and our profession. While I am confident that I have the necessary organizational and communications skills for the functional aspects of the office, I am most excited by this chance to offer my commitment, experience, and enthusiasm to continue this legacy of achievement. Be assured that you will have nothing but my very best effort. I am ready and anxious to get started.
