AIA Center for Building Science and Performance Hosts Disaster Mitigation Seminar in D.C. on March 7
Join the AIA Center for Building Science and Performance (CBSP) for “Disaster Resilience Through Mitigation Planning and Building Performance,” an all-day seminar March 7 at AIA national headquarters in Washington, D.C. This seminar will feature disaster resilience experts who work on the full range of recovery. This includes immediate set-up after a disaster to get power to the site, assessment of damaged structures, and recommendations for large-scale rebuilding, such as in New Orleans. Through presentations and discussions, the program will review disaster mitigation planning for infrastructure, buildings, and electronics. Committee on Design, AIA Detroit Explore “Design Parallels,” April 3–6
Join the AIA Committee on Design and AIA Detroit in the Motor City April 3-6 for “Design Parallels: Architecture, Industrial Design, Transportation Design, Interior Design,” a conference exploring design analogies and parallels through architecture, the automotive industry, industrial design, and other design professions. Attendees will have the opportunity to tour sites that will serve as case studies in Detroit's legacy of design, including: Ford and General Motors manufacturing facilities designed by Albert Kahn and sustainable design adaptations to the Ford River Rouge Plant by William McDonough + Partners; the Cranbrook Academy of Art, designed by Eliel Saarinen, with buildings by Steven Holl, Tod Williams + Billie Tsien, and others; Lafayette Park by Mies van der Rohe; the Breuer Library in Grosse Pointe, Mich.; and the Detroit Renaissance Center, designed by John Portman, with recent renovation and expansion by Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, Gensler, SmithGroup, and Ghafari Associates.
