AIA Center for Building Science and Performance Hosts Disaster Mitigation Seminar in D.C. on March 7
Join the AIA Center for Building Science and Performance (CBSP) for “Disaster Resilience Through Mitigation Planning and Building Performance,” an all-day seminar March 7 at AIA national headquarters in Washington, D.C. This seminar will feature disaster resilience experts who work on the full range of recovery. This includes immediate set-up after a disaster to get power to the site, assessment of damaged structures, and recommendations for large-scale rebuilding, such as in New Orleans. Through presentations and discussions, the program will review disaster mitigation planning for infrastructure, buildings, and electronics. Attendees are also invited to attend a pre-seminar networking reception on the evening of March 6. For more information and to register, visit the CBSP Web site.

AIA RFP Research Grant Proposals Due April 16

The AIA Board Knowledge Committee is seeking proposals for research projects to be completed in a seven-month period, beginning in May 2008. The AIA will award up to 10 grants of up to $7,000 each for selected projects; these funds will need to be matched. Proposals that address building typology, practice issues, or materials and methods of construction are welcome. This grant qualifies recipients to have their findings and outcomes published both electronically in the AIA Soloso online database and in print in The American Institute of Architects Report on University Research, Volume 4, a nationally distributed publication. Preference will be given to PhD candidates and junior faculty members focusing on completion or distribution of research or on initial explorations of a particular concept. Entries are due April 16.
