  The New Suburban Migration
Can architects help affordable housing move out to the suburbs?
Although most housing policies still concentrate affordable housing in central cities, for the first time more poor people live in suburbs. To combat this contradiction, AIA members and knowledge community affordable housing experts propose linking affordability with sustainability and developing architects’ role as community advocates.

Projects come in many sizes: from simple additions to existing buildings to large, complex projects involving multiple bid packages and fast track schedules and everything in between. So why has the AIA traditionally published only a limited number of standard form Owner/Architect agreements to serve the full range of project complexity? In the November 5 release of updated 2007 documents, the AIA has acknowledged this conundrum and is providing options that allow architects and owners to select among several Owner/Architect agreements, each individually crafted to respond to a project’s complexity. Following are the major updates related to the 2007 Owner/Architect Agreements.

Making the Match: Formal Mentoring Requires Goals and Guidelines
Chances are, most people have had—or have been—a mentor at one time or another, whether we realize it or not, writes Emily Grandstaff-Rice, AIA, LEED-AP, regional liaison advisor on the AIA YAF Advisory Committee. Mentoring benefits both the mentor and the protégé through reciprocal sharing of knowledge, insights, and skills. Young designers often enter the workforce with great education and skills but with little project organizational or managerial experience. Successful mentors can fill this gap by showing their protégés how their work fits into the big picture, through feedback and constructive criticism, while simultaneously developing better employees.
