AIA
San Diego Recognizes the Year’s Most Impressive Projects
Summary: AIA
San Diego announces the 2007 winners in the chapter’s design
awards and Young Architect of the Year (YAYA) programs. Serving as
jurors were: Angela Brooks, AIA, LEED-AP, Pugh + Scarpa; John Holmes,
AIA, Holst Architecture; and James Richärd, AIA, Richärd & Bauer
Architecture. The jurors evaluated more than 80 applications in this
year’s Design Awards Program and chose to present three honor
awards, five merit awards, four citations, a Divine Details award,
and an Energy Efficiency Integration Award. All winning projects
are in San Diego.
HONOR
AWARDS
AIA San Diego’s highest award celebrates extraordinary,
thoroughly resolved architectural design, worthy of the profession’s
highest regard.
Residential
Lemke House, by Luce et Studio Architects
James Richärd, AIA: “One of the things that stood out
for the panel on this project was the ultimate reuse of an existing
home. The architects created a wonderful modern living environment
without sacrificing or destroying a vintage California Ranch home.
There was no need to build an opulent, oversized structure. The home
was modest but the detailing was impeccable.”
John Holmes, AIA: “This project reflects a sublime use of materials
and a subtle exchange of textures and material. There are real moments
of pleasure and surprise throughout. The typical expectation you
have walking into a ranch house is, in this case, countered by a
spatial experience that is fluid and without distraction.”

UCSD Student Services Center by Rob Wellington
Quigley, FAIA
James Richärd, AIA: “This building was simple, to the
point, and very powerful.”
Angela Brooks, AIA, LEED: “Our panel was impressed by the inviting
nature of the architecture. The openness and circulation—the
manner that students move through the building—worked very
well. And, unexpected, playful details resulted in a building that
opens itself to the student community and invites participation.”

Mixed-Use
The Union, by Jonathan Segal Architect, FAIA
John Holmes, AIA: “This mixed use project really hit all the
right notes. It is a project that leads by example, accomplishing
great things with a modest budget and focus on energy efficiency.”
Angela Brooks, AIA, LEED: “The scale of this project was really
an asset. The way the buildings meet the street is very successful,
along with the creativity in interlocking space between residences
and commercial offices.” (Photo by the architect.)
