  Designing for Ultimate Comfort
Temperature sensors are becoming smaller and better connected
The science of thermal comfort—what accounts for someone feeling comfortable or not comfortable in a space—is remarkably poorly understood, notes Scott Frank, a partner at the New York City engineering firm Jaros, Baum, & Bolles. Frank shares an overview of some of the changes in store for controlling personal environments and how these new technologies and methodologies fit into larger environmental contexts.

Architects Are Artists
Exhibit gives Santa Barbara architects space for art for art’s sake
The Architects as Artists exhibit hosted by Santa Barbara’s Arts Alive! gallery showcased the visual artistic abilities of 20 local architects working in a variety of media. The participants ranged from seasoned art exhibitors to artists whose work had never been seen in pubic before, but all drew encouragement and inspiration from the chance to see the raw creative potential of their fellow colleagues.

WHR Architects’ Japan Design Trip Expands Architecture Awareness
Health-care architecture firm goes to the Far East to learn more than functionality
A team of 21 architects, medical planners, and interior designers from the Houston and Dallas offices of Watkins Hamilton Ross Architects (WHR), one of the country’s leading health-care design firms, embarked on a nine-day design tour of Japan last April. Astute about functionally driven hospital design, the staff’s goal on the trip was to expand its architecture design awareness through international exchange and exploration. The team visited the Japan cities of Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto, Kobe, and Awaji Island. The Japan tour included Japanese architecture offices, such as Tadao Ando Architects in Tokyo, as well as hospitals, retail, housing, and hotels. The trip also featured many landmarks in each of the five cities.
