Clark Manus, FAIA

07 will be a transformational year for the AIA. The recent changes at the AIA, underscored by the focus expressed in our mission statement, are positive signs. But, we have much to accomplish as the voice of our profession and a resource to members in serving society. Building on the momentum of the AIA’s 150th anniversary to reinforce the foundation for the continued evolution of our profession will enable us to think globally and act locally.

The decade ahead will offer new frontiers and challenges for the architectural profession. While we facilitate the creation of quality environments, AIA members must continue to play key roles as stewards of public policy on the built environment. My leadership on the creation of an AIA layer on Google Earth will communicate the exceptional efforts of our Blueprint for America projects and is a demonstration of the dual role architects play. We must continue to pursue initiatives that utilize creative thinking and are timely and relevant. The message that our collaboration with Google Earth will send to the world about the AIA’s role and the value of design is unprecedented.

We must use the strength of our organization, enabling us to create great communities, develop sustainable architecture, and expand the practice of architecture.

Here is what I believe we must do to be more effective:

Knowledge

  • Nurture lifelong learning
  • Mentor those who are entering the profession
  • Engage the evolving world of technology in the global economy

Community

  • Expand our models of participation and collaboration
  • Support the diversity of the communities we serve

Advocacy

  • Exercise our duty to the public and future generations of architects on key issues such as sustainability.

I look forward to maintaining a vibrant and dynamic AIA with your support.
