Gordon
E. Mills, FAIA, Dubuque, Iowa, was elected second vice president of the
National Council of Architectural Registration Boards (NCARB) at the
council’s 87th annual meeting
and conference in late June in Cincinnati. Mills, who served as the council’s
treasurer for the past two years, is chair and chief executive officer
of The Durrant Group Inc. He joined the firm in 1967, and has helped
it grow in size, capability, and reach.
From 2002–2004, Mills served as director for NCARB’s Region
4 (the Midwest). Mills was elected regional chair in 2001–2002
and regional vice-chair in 2000–2001. His service to NCARB also
includes three years as a volunteer grader for the Architect Registration
Examination (ARE).
Mills
earned a BArch from Iowa State University in 1965. He has served as a
member of the Iowa Architectural Examiners Board and is a co-founder
of the Iowa Architectural Foundation. In 2002, Mills received AIA Iowa’s
Gold Medal for recognition of his distinguished service to the profession
of architecture.
NCARB President’s Medal
Also at their annual meeting, NCARB awarded the President’s Medal
for distinguished service to six individuals who have made significant
contributions to the protection of the public health, safety, and welfare
through their service to NCARB and to the practice of architecture. They
are:
Stuart Howard, MAIBC, former chair of
the Committee of Canadian Architectural Councils, and José “Pepe” Manuel
Reachi Mora, current president of the Federación de Colegios
de Arquitectos de la República Mexicana, who helped to guide the
final phase of the Tri-National Mutual Recognition Agreement, a framework
in which qualified U.S., Canadian, and Mexican architects can pursue
practice opportunities in one another’s jurisdiction.
Doreen Johnson Frost, who leads the
Minnesota Board of Architecture, Engineering, Land Surveying, Landscape
Architecture, Geoscience, and Interior Design as its executive director
and is one of NCARB’s “most
generous volunteer committee members.”
Kim Brown Garrison, an integral member
of the NCARB staff for more than a quarter of a century who now currently
serves as senior manager of the professional development program.
Renis O. Jones Jr., FAIA, Montgomery,
Ala., who has given more than 50 years of service to the profession of
architecture, including five terms on the Alabama Board for Registration
of Architects.
C. Stan Peterson, FAIA, Topeka, Kans., a dedicated and noteworthy
regulatory leader, who served a 13-year tenure on the Kansas State Board
of Technical Professions, which he twice chaired.
