4/2006

FOR VICE PRESIDENT
George H. Miller, FAIA

Our AIA, with its sound strategic planning and responsible financial practices, is a more effective organization than ever before, serving our members and our communities in ways not deemed possible just a few years ago.

The Institute’s focus on the three important initiatives of knowledge, advocacy, and community provides a strategic vision that is results oriented, understandable, and responsive to the needs of our membership. We are increasing our knowledge, improving our practices, and elevating the voice of architecture and design.

In anticipation of the AIA’s 150th anniversary in 2007, the Blueprint for America is encouraging our members to continue their work to achieve healthier, safer, more livable, and sustainable communities. Through AIA150, we have the opportunity to have a profound impact on the awareness and stature of our profession. Providing leadership in this initiative will be an important focus during the next year.

I pledge to work with you to advance our goals in:
Knowledge: We must encourage the sharing of knowledge across the Institute. We must reinforce the relationship between the academic and practice communities and strengthen the alignment between our components and the knowledge communities. We must advance the research agenda and address the issues of integrated practice.
Advocacy: We must continue to advocate for the pressing needs of our communities: more affordable housing, improved schools and hospitals, energy conservation, comprehensive regional planning, and better public transportation and infrastructure. We must strengthen our efforts to achieve diversity in our organization.
Community: We must advance our community agenda to engage our diverse membership, including our young and emerging members, in the work of the Institute. We must provide value to all of our members and reach out to a wider and more diverse public.

My association with the AIA has greatly enriched my experience as an architect. I welcome the opportunity to help build the Institute into an even more highly respected organization, providing service to our members and communicating to all the value of architecture. I ask for your support.
