Throughout my tenure on
the Board of Directors of The American Institute of Architects, my primary
goal has been to provide thoughtful consideration and exercise reasoned
judgment on matters affecting the members, the components, and the Institute
as a whole. For many years prior to joining the AIA, I perceived that
our profession’s position within the construction industry was
diminishing. I saw that our clients or the general public did not recognize
the value of our members’ expertise, experience, and knowledge.
Once I became a member, I saw the AIA as the vehicle to create change
by addressing those issues in appropriate ways. I have observed and participated
in these efforts during my involvement at the local and state level,
as well as on the AIA Board of Directors. I look back with pride at the
progress we have made by developing and delivering diverse knowledge
initiatives, establishing and advocating our public policy positions,
and communicating the value of design and architects to a broad audience.
As a member of the Secretary’s Advisory Committee for the past
four years, I have assisted in resolving numerous matters that affect
the governance of the Institute and its rules and procedures. I believe
those decisions have had a positive impact. That experience has prepared
me well for the role of Secretary of the Institute, your Institute, our
American Institute of Architects. If elected to the office of Secretary,
I will continue to address both existing and emerging issues with the
same careful consideration and open communication.
