The
AIA 2006 National Convention and Design Exposition, to be held June 8–10
at the Los Angeles Convention Center, offers a number of intriguing events
with a theme of “Architecture
on the Edge: Innovation, Engagement, Inspiration.” This year’s
exciting and insight-packed theme presentations will explore innovations
in design and construction, examine the challenges of the public realm,
and inspire fresh visions of a preferred future for the profession and
for the built world.
Intriguing speakers
Innovation: On Thursday, June 8, join
world-renowned designers Frank Gehry, FAIA; Arata Isozaki, Hon. FAIA;
and José Rafael Moneo,
Hon. FAIA, in a vivid wide-ranging conversation discussing their contributions
to Los Angeles and how the power of architecture can transform the
area, its residents, and visitors. They’re leading the profession
into the future while celebrating all that came before. Hear them explore
their views of what’s to come.
Engagement: Transportation and airport experts Marilyn Taylor, FAIA,
partner-in-charge, Skidmore Owings and Merrill Urban Design and Planning/Airports
and Transportation, and former Executive Director of Los Angeles World
Airports Kim Day, AIA, join the University of Virginia’s School
of Architecture Professor Bill Morrish on Friday, June 9, to share how
engagement and individual civic commitment by architects benefit the
public works clients and communities they serve.
Inspiration: The Washington
Post recently told its readers that “no
designer is more important to watch now” than William McDonough,
FAIA, William McDonough Partners, Charlottesville, Va. For more than
20 years, he has integrated sustainable practices and materials into
design. On Saturday, June 10, he will discuss the greening of the profession.
Come hear the challenge.
Intriguing party!
On Thursday, June 8, join the Los Angeles Host Chapter for a night of
global cuisine, music, and dance by some of LA’s top musicians
and performers at the “worLd pArty.” The party begins with
a special event kick-off honoring the winners of the AIA/LA Design
Awards and continues with a night of entertainment, music, and food
that represent the unique city of LA. A 360-degree projection of Los
Angeles’ architecture, culture, and history, both past and present,
will be screened on the historic train station, city hall, and surrounding
buildings that make up Los Angeles’ original Mexican neighborhood
surrounding Olvera Street Plaza—the birthplace of the City of
Los Angeles.
