AIA Component Executives Elevate Awareness

The Council of Architectural Component Executives (CACE) at its annual meeting elected 2006 officers, shared knowledge on providing the best service to AIA members, and recognized executive excellence August 10–13 in Portland, Ore., the City of Roses. “CACE in Bloom” brought more than 150 AIA component staff leaders together to learn more about human resources, membership, accounting, finance, and available tools to help make their work more effective.

The blend of activities included an update on plans for the AIA150 anniversary commemorations leading up to 2007, sessions on effective component programs and activities, a presentation by U.S. Congressman Earl Blumenauer (D-Ore.) on the importance of community and design in Portland, walking tours of downtown Portland—one of America’s most livable municipalities, and a riverboat cruise to reinforce collegial bonds and enjoy the city’s beautiful skyline. The program also offered time for the component executives to meet with vendors and service providers.

The election of the new slate of officers took place during the business meeting August 12. The 2006 officers are:

  • David Crawford, AIA North Carolina, president
  • Bonnie Staiger, AIA North Dakota, president-elect
  • Anne Swager, Hon. AIA, AIA Pittsburgh, vice president of resource development
  • Fredric Bell, FAIA, AIA New York Chapter, secretary
  • William Babcock, Hon. AIA, AIA Wisconsin, director
  • Randy Lavigne, AIA Nevada/AIA Las Vegas, director
  • Margie O’Driscoll, AIA San Francisco, director
  • Elizabeth Mitchell, AIA Utah/AIA Salt Lake, past president.

During the program, 2005 CACE President Elizabeth Mitchell awarded the council’s highest honors, the Executive of the Year to R. Kent Mather, AIA, AIA Santa Clara Valley, and the Presidential Citation to Paul Welch Jr., Hon. AIA, AIA California Council. Mather, nominated by his colleagues, received his plaque for his contributions to advancing the profession of architecture through his extraordinary leadership of AIA Santa Clara Valley and dedicated service to CACE. The Presidential Citation, chosen by the CACE president, was given to Welch for his commitment to building strong partnerships for the benefit of members, clients, and the public.
