GSA Searches for New Chief Architect
Applications due by May 27
 

The U.S. General Services Administration is searching for a new Chief Architect for its Public Buildings Service, headquartered in Washington, D.C. The new Chief Architect replaces Ed Feiner, FAIA, who retired from the PBS in January. Applications are due by May 27 and may not be made online. The Chief Architect directs a staff of 65 in the nation’s capital and is responsible for 337,000,000 square feet of office space and $3 billion of design and construction work currently in progress, including the Federal Building in San Francisco, designed by Morphosis (shown).

The United States General Services Administration (GSA), Public Buildings Service (PBS), invites applications for the position of Chief Architect. PBS is the premier federal real estate property organization for the federal government. The Chief Architect is a national leader in design and construction excellence, and serves as the "master builder" for 337 million square feet of office space and $3 billion of design and construction work currently in progress.

GSA's Chief Architect directs a talented and dedicated Washington, D.C.-based staff of 65 design professionals and public administrators and oversees execution of projects in the 11 GSA regions. The Chief Architect is the senior program administrator and advisor to the GSA Administrator and Commissioner of the Public Buildings Service on matters related to the life-cycle of design and construction projects, which includes project planning, procurement, cost management, and contract management. The Chief Architect also provides leadership in historic preservation and fine arts.

The Chief Architect reviews and recommends to the PBS Commissioner the approval of the designs for all major new construction and modernization projects and directs the development of the national standards and technical policies for design and construction.

Candidates must have demonstrated professional experience applying advanced principles of architecture, architectural design (or design management), engineering, construction, interior design (and planning), landscape design, and urban design to large, complex construction projects; direct knowledge and experience planning, managing, evaluating, and overseeing high-profile, multi-million dollar, design and construction projects on schedule and on budget, including management or oversight of a geographically dispersed portfolio with responsibility for continual improvement of design and construction services across the portfolio; the ability to oversee and lead a team toward successful delivery of construction projects and design activities; and the ability to effectively present to and negotiate with a broad range of executive level decision makers.
