FOR VICE PRESIDENT

Angel C. Saqui, FAIA

My vision for the AIA is to be the organization controlling the entire profession.

As vice president, in addition to performing the responsibilities that are normal to this position, and as part of my vision for One AIA, I will bring in a number of other issues in which I have a long experience, such as:

Our architectural educational system. Graduates from our accredited universities have to be re-examined in the same subjects they already passed before they can be licensed. This shows a lack of trust in our own accreditation system. I will propose to work in conjunction with the collateral organizations to have our accredited universities meet certain curriculum requirements related to licensing to make their degrees acceptable for registration after completion of the internship process.

National licensing. Our licensing laws date from the times when there were no universities training architects. To protect the public, examinations were developed to license those individuals who wanted to practice architecture. This obsolete system has been carried to the present. I will advocate the replacement of the archaic licensing by states with a national registration system, with examinations only for foreign architects from non-accredited universities, until an international licensing process is established.

Small firms. All my life I have been an advocate of the small firms. For the purpose of adding a resource at the Institute specifically dedicated to this large constituency, and also to be in accordance with our Inclusiveness and One AIA policies, I have authored Resolution 05–06 (co-authored and to be introduced by our two Florida-Caribbean regional directors) for the creation of a Small Firms Committee. This resolution will help the small firms succeed in federal and private markets.
