Honorary Fellows

Honorary Fellowship is bestowed on architects of esteemed character and distinguished achievements who are neither U.S. citizens nor U.S. residents, and who do not primarily practice architecture within the domain of the Institute. The AIA is pleased to present this year’s five recipients.

Massimo Carmassi, Hon. FAIA, (1) Italy. Carmassi, an important national architect of Italy, has developed a trademark style of masonry architecture that reframes the old, both in new buildings and restorations. A professor at the University Institute of Architecture Venice, he also has dedicated his life’s work to documentation of Pisa’s historical fabric. He is a recipient of the Gold Medal for Italian Architecture.

Mikko Heikkinen, Hon. FAIA, (1) Finland. Selected for Honorary Fellow this year along with his partner, Markku Komonen, Hon. FAIA, Heikkinen is a principal of Helsinki’s highly respected Heikkinen-Komonen. The firm’s work, firmly rooted in the traditions of Finnish and international Modernism, includes the Finnish Embassy in Washington, D.C. Since 1992, Heikkinen also has served as a visiting professor and critic at several schools of architecture, including Washington University and Virginia Tech.

Paul Hyett, Hon. FAIA, (3) United Kingdom. Hyett, an internationally known proponent of socially and ecologically responsible architecture, is co-author of A Rough Guide to Sustainability; creator of a sustainability-oriented curriculum for schools of architecture, notably in South Africa; and a writer and lecturer for newspapers, radio, and television. The chair of RyderHKS in Essex, he also served as the 2002 president of the Royal Institute of British Architects.

Markku Komonen, Hon. FAIA, (1) Finland. Heikkinen-Komonen’s works of architecture—in Finland as well as Africa, Europe, and the United States, where he designed the Embassy of Finland in Washington, D.C.—are well respected in their native land and across the globe. A professor at Helsinki University of Technology, Komonen counts among his numerous design accolades the Aga Khan Award for Architecture and the Finland Award.

Sang–Leem Lee, Hon. FAIA, (5) Korea. Sang-Leem Lee, president and CEO of the Space Group, has earned a sterling reputation as a preservationist and restoration architect in Korea. He also serves as an active member of the Korean Institute of Architects and the Korea Institute of Construction Engineering and Space Management, and is the editor/publisher of SPACE magazine.
