All About It: Seven Beautiful Buildings Win 2003 Library Awards
Every other year, representatives from the AIA and the American
Library Association gather to select the finest examples of one
of the building types most revered by the public: the library. The
2003 AIA/ALA Library Building Awards honor seven disparate projects,
from a small, private research facility in the hills of Virginia
to 325,000 square feet of renovation in three buildings at the University
of Washington. All share successful resolution of their patrons’
needs into harmonious and beautiful designs.
Poll: What Do You Think About Architecture
Education?
Grassroots Leadership Conference participants expressed their opinions
on six topics—architecture education, financial alignment,
the profession, communications, knowledge, and membership—during
the
annual Issues Forum, March 10, in Washington, D.C. Now it’s
your turn. Please respond to the following five questions about
the first topic: architecture education. AIArchitect
will run polls of the other topics, tally the results, and share
them in future issues.
Sen.
Moynihan Dies at 76
Daniel Patrick Moynihan, Hon. AIA—senator, ambassador, author,
and great friend to the profession and staunch supporter of excellence
in architecture and urban planning—died March 26 in Washington,
D.C. He was suffering from complications from a ruptured appendix
removed March 11. Next week’s AIArchitect
will feature remembrances and tribute to this great man and his
towering intellect.
Architects Take Lead Setting Trans-Atlantic
Mutual Recognition Standards
The AIA, Architects’ Council of Europe (ACE), and National
Council of Architectural Registration Boards (NCARB) have begun
negotiations for a future Mutual Recognition Agreement (MRA) slated
for completion in mid-2004. The final agreement will identify specific
criteria and procedures for the mutual recognition of education,
training, and experience standards among the participating political
and economic bodies. An initial accord was signed by the parties
at a December 2002 meeting in Washington where objectives and basic
principles were identified.
Convention
to Explore “The World Trade Center Site—Design Matters!”
The AIA 2003 National Convention and Expo offers theme presentations
that will provide an opportunity to hear new perspectives, informed
opinions, and inspiring visions from industry leaders and entrepreneurial
innovators about this year’s theme, “Design Matters!
Poetry + Proof.”
MARKETPLACE RESEARCH
Learning From the Client: Communication
and Expectations
Part II: The architect’s perspective
All architects are aware of the opportunities to learn from and
with our clients. In last month’s column, we interviewed Douglas
Bailey, AIA, the capital program manager of the Seattle Public Library
system, who has made the move from practice to client. This month,
turnabout is fair play, so we talked to two architects who have
worked with this “architect-client.” We wanted to know
whether they felt they were the victim or the beneficiary of an
architect-client who was really into the process of creating good
design.

Construction Signs as a Marketing Tool
How many times have you approached a construction site by car, eagerly
anticipating seeing a construction sign, only to discover one or
more of the three deadly sins:
a) There is no sign
b) The text is too small to read from a moving vehicle
c) Essential contact information is missing?

Tools for Creating Livable Communities
A new clearinghouse has assembled a wealth of information on creating
livable communities. Better-Buildings.org, a venture of Project
for Public Spaces, developed in collaboration with the AIA Center
for Livable Communities, American Architectural Foundation, Mayor’s
Institute on City Design, General Services Administration, and International
Downtown Association, offers an information treasure trove for people
who design, manage, or rent space in buildings located in urban
communities.
