2004 Housing PIA Awards to Honor
Residential Work of All Ilks
Entry forms and fees due November 21; submissions due December 19

(Photo © Lawrence Anderson.)The AIA Housing Professional Interest Area (PIA) invites residential architects to take part in its fourth annual awards program to recognize the best in housing design. The program emphasizes the importance of good housing as a necessity of life, a sanctuary for the human spirit, and a valuable national resource.

Any complete structure designed to be a single-family house or multifamily housing is eligible for entry. New construction, renovations, restored homes and buildings, and attached single-family and multifamily housing in the U.S. are also eligible. All projects must be completed since January 1, 2000.

Single-family housing.
This award is in two categories: the Single-Family Market Housing Award will spotlight merchant-built homes; the Single-Family Custom Housing Award will recognize outstanding custom and remodeled homes. (Entrants should specify the appropriate category on the entry form.)

Multifamily housing.
This category considers high- and low-density projects for public and private clients. In addition to architectural design features, the jury will assess the integration of the buildings into their context, including open and recreational space and transportation options.

Any complete "innovative" design of some aspect of a dwelling is eligible for entry in this category. Submissions that reflect innovation in the design of details, use of new technologies, adaptation of materials, and application of the architectural design process are encouraged.

Community design.
This award recognizes projects that show, through careful planning and design, how architects contribute to making safe, attractive, economically viable, and environmentally sustainable communities.

AIA architects and owners may submit projects. The award-winners will receive significant recognition: They will be displayed at the AIA 2004 National Convention and Expo in Chicago and acknowledged in AIA publications, including AIArchitect.
