Young Architects Forum Calls for Leaders

 

The National AIA YAF Advisory Committee is seeking four new members for 2004. Interested young architects—those licensed less than 10 years—should submit application materials by mail to Suzanna Wight, AIA, emerging professionals director, The American Institute of Architects, 1735 New York Avenue NW, Washington, DC, 20006-5292. Applications must be postmarked by 5 p.m. EST, November 21.

Applications must contain:

  • Applicant’s letter of interest, of one page maximum, describing his or her interest in a specific position or positions and stating whether a one- or two-year term is preferred
  • Back-up materials, of five 8-1/2x11 pages maximum, including applicant’s resume at a minimum
  • Three letters of recommendation, including at least one from a local, state, regional, or national AIA component representative.

Advisory committee positions open for assignment in 2004 are:

Vice chair

  • First year of two-year sequential term, serving second year as chair
  • Advisory Committee experience preferred
  • May not serve in a YAF regional liaison role concurrently or have been a YAF past chair
  • Appointment based on self-nominating letter of interest; recommendations from COF, YAF, or AIA member; and selection by existing members of the YAF advisory committee.

Functions:

  • Assists with chair’s functions and serves as chair in chair’s absence
  • Serves as primary contact for relations with allied organizations and AIA knowledge communities
  • Facilitates visioning session and strategic plan for upcoming YAF AdCom year and events
  • Is responsible for maintaining quarterly contact with two assigned regional liaisons
  • Plans agenda, topics, and discussion for YAF advisory committee/regional liaison meeting at national convention
  • Applies for acceptance into AIA Leadership Institute
  • Coordinates with director regarding budget preparation for upcoming year
  • Establishes and maintains contact with national AIA president-elect
  • Maintains contact with College of Fellows vice-chancellor
  • Serves on YAF Leadership Awards jury.

The vice chair participates in YAF Advisory Committee conference calls; is funded to attend Grassroots, the national convention, and AIA Leadership Institute (as funding allows through COF); and may be funded to attend other functions to represent YAF if the chair is not available.

Communications advisor

  • One-year term, regional-liaison experience preferred
  • Requires prior YAF chapter-level experience and should have excellent writing skills
  • May reapply for second consecutive term but may not serve in position more than two years total
  • May not serve in a YAF regional liaison role concurrently.

Appointment based on self-nominating letter of interest; recommendations from COF, YAF, or AIA members; and selection by existing members of the YAF AdCom.

Functions:

  • Serves as public-relations advisor in public-relations advisor’s absence
  • Maintains contact with College of Fellows regional representatives liaison
  • Oversees and reviews all communications to the YAF AdCom and regional liaisons
  • Editor-in-chief of bimonthly YAF publication
  • Works closely with director to solicit/collect articles of interest to young architects for YAF publication
  • Oversees and maintains organization of folders, files, and associated material on e-Room Web site
  • Coordinates and distributes all YAF communications to AIA components and CACE members
  • Is responsible for maintaining quarterly contact with three assigned regional liaisons (TBD)
  • Coordinates invitations to all YAF programs/events (in conjunction with director)
  • Serves on YAF Leadership Awards jury.

Funded to attend Grassroots and national convention, participates in YAF Advisory Committee conference calls, and may be funded to attend other functions to represent YAF.

Public relations advisor

  • One-year term, regional liaison experience preferred
  • Requires prior YAF chapter-level experience and should have excellent communication skills
  • May reapply for second consecutive term, but may not serve in position more than two years total
  • May not serve in a YAF regional liaison role concurrently
  • Appointment based on self-nominating letter of interest; recommendations from COF, YAF, or AIA members; and selection by existing members of the YAF advisory committee.

Functions:

  • Serves as communications advisor in communication advisor’s absence
  • Oversees all publicity for national YAF activities
  • Coordinates with regional liaisons and local YAF leaders regarding publicity efforts
  • Writes or coordinates articles to increase public awareness of YAF
  • Coordinates all efforts regarding YAF Leadership Awards program, working closely with director
  • Is responsible for maintaining quarterly contact with three assigned regional liaisons
  • Prepares and coordinates annual call for new YAF AdCom members
  • Coordinates and advises updates to material content on YAF Web site, in conjunction with director
  • Checks YAF Web site weekly for email and/or other correspondence
  • Serves on YAF Leadership Awards jury.

The public-relations advisor participates in YAF Advisory Committee conference calls, is funded to attend Grassroots and the national convention, and may be funded to attend other functions to represent YAF.

Regional liaison advisor

  • One-year term
  • Regional liaison experience required
  • May reapply for second consecutive term but may not serve in position more than two years total
  • May serve in a YAF regional liaison role concurrently
  • Appointment based on self-nominating letter of interest; recommendations from COF, YAF, or AIA members; and selection by existing members of the YAF Advisory Committee.

Functions:

  • Maintains all communications with YAF regional liaisons
  • Serves as primary contact for regional liaisons and all associated events/programs
  • Solicits information, discussion, and participation from regional liaisons as required or necessary
  • Coordinates annual regional liaison reports with assistance from director
  • Monitors, solicits, and initiates process of keeping all YAF regional liaison positions filled
  • Communicates with and provides information to newly appointed regional liaisons
  • Is responsible for advisory committee’s accountability in maintaining contact with assigned regional liaisons
  • Is responsible for maintaining quarterly contact with three assigned regional liaisons
  • Solicits, organizes, and maintains donations/sponsorship for YAF regional liaison attendance at national convention or other YAF events
  • Serves on YAF Leadership Awards jury.

The regional liaison advisor participates in YAF Advisory Committee conference calls and is funded to attend Grassroots and the national convention.

All advisory committee members must be licensed 10 years or less at least for the first year of service on the committee. All terms begin at the start of the calendar year. Funding will be available as the annual budget allows.
