The AIA Academy of Architecture for Health invites you to join them in Denver November 19–22 for their 2003 fall conference, "Women, Children, and Healthcare: Designing Facilities for Distinctive Needs." This year’s event features leaders in the field, including:

  • Leanne Kaiser Carlson, a futurist known for her keen insight into the forces transforming health care, who will speak about how to “Awaken the Future: New Possibilities in Women's and Children's Health”
  • Beverley H. Johnson, president and CEO of the Institute for Family-Centered Care in Bethesda, Md., who will present the closing address.

The conference will offer a number of forums on special topics, including architects in health-care organizations, planning and programming, research facilities, technology, therapeutic environments, and design value.

Participants also will have a special opportunity to join in five guided tours of outstanding health-care facilities in the Denver area:

  • Boulder Community Foothills Hospital, by OZ Architecture, Boulder Associates Inc., and Civitas, scheduled to be the first LEED-certified in-patient hospital in the U.S.
  • Parker Adventist Hospital, by HKS, Inc., a 101-bed facility located on a 40-acre medical campus in Parker, Colo., which offers neighboring communities all of the healing medical advantages of the 21st century at a location closer than ever expected.
  • Anschutz Outpatient Pavilion, by H+L Architecture, located at the former Fitzsimons Army Campus in Aurora, Colo., is one of the largest health-care facilities in the country built with fast-track design/build.
  • Exempla Lutheran Heart Center, Wheat Ridge, Colo., by H+L Architecture, has a three-year agreement with General Electric, under which GE will keep the center in state-of-the-art equipment and software so it can serve as a testing site for new product development.

The conference also will serve as the venue for special events, including the annual Modern Healthcare Awards Banquet, a special tour of Invesco Field at Mile High the 15th Annual AAH/STERIS Student Design Charrette, the annual AAH Health-care Products and Technology Exhibit, and the Health Facilities Review Exhibition.
