Heads Up: Awards Nominations Due in October
Check dates for Kemper, Whitney Young, Young Architects Awards;
Fellowship; and Topaz Medallion nominations

 

Whom do you admire most within the profession? Be they young architects or seasoned professionals, humanitarians, social activists, or educators, stand up and get them nominated for a national award! Nominations for the following AIA national awards are due in October.

C. James Lawler, FAIA, the 2003 Kemper Award winner.Edward C. Kemper Award, Whitney M. Young Jr. Award, and Young Architects Award nominations are due October 10:

  • The Edward C. Kemper Award, named in honor of the AIA’s first executive director, recognizes individuals who contribute significantly to the profession of architecture through service to the AIA.
  • The Whitney M. Young Jr. Award, named in honor of the civil rights leader and conferred annually by the national Board of Directors, honors an architect or architecturally oriented organization that has contributed significantly to fulfilling the profession's responsibility to society. Honorees can be active in many different fields of responsibility. Members of the national AIA Board of Directors or a component or PIA may make nominations for the Whitney M. Young Award.
  • The Young Architects Awards honor individuals who have shown exceptional leadership and made significant contributions to the profession in an early stage of their architectural career. Any component, member of the national AIA Board of Directors, PIA, or College of Fellows may nominate one or more architect members of the AIA who have been licensed to practice architecture less than 10 years by the submission deadline. The term “young architect” has no reference to the age of nominees.

Photo © Fred Greaves.AIA Fellowship nominations, due October 17: The AIA Fellowship program was developed to elevate those architects who have made a significant contribution to architecture and society and who have achieved a standard of excellence in the profession. Election to fellowship not only recognizes the achievements of the architect as an individual, but also honors before the public and the profession a model architect who has made a significant contribution to architecture and society on a national level.

AIA/ACSA Topaz Medallion for Excellence in Architectural Education, due October 24: This annual award, presented jointly by the AIA and the Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture (ACSA), honors an individual who has made outstanding contributions to architecture education for at least 10 years and whose teaching has influenced a broad range of students. (Nominees must be living at the time of nomination.) Any colleague, student, or former student may nominate candidates for the Topaz Medallion.

Members of the national AIA Board of Directors or a component or PIA may make nominations for the Edward C. Kemper Award, the Whitney M. Young Award, and the Young Architects Awards. These people are willing and eager to take suggestions for nominees from other AIA members. Contact your Board representative. Each PIA/Knowledge Community lists its own advisory group on its Web site.
