Congress for the New Urbanism Announces 15 Charter Award Winners

The Congress for the New Urbanism, a San Francisco-based nonprofit organization advocating mixed-use neighborhoods with pedestrian-friendly buildings, selected 15 projects as exemplars of New Urbanism. The annual awards program recognizes excellence at all scales of design, each with a different approach to improving a city, town, or region. Winning projects range from a new block in Berlin to a regional plan for the San Francisco Bay area and a freeway demolition in Milwaukee.

The awards jury included:
• Chair Daniel Solomon, FAIA, principal, Solomon E.T.C., a WRT Company
• Larry Beasley, Vancouver’s director of current planning and co-director of planning
• Ellen Dunham-Jones, director, Georgia Institute of Technology architecture program
• Robert Fishman, professor of architecture and urban planning, Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning
• Peter Katz, consultant and author of The New Urbanism: Toward an Architecture of Community
• Hans Stimmann, director of urban development, Senate Department of Urban Development, Berlin.
