At the May 10 business
meeting of the 135th AIA convention in San Diego, delegates voted unanimously
to adopt a Bylaws amendment that permits electronic voting and eliminates
use of standing votes at annual and special corporate meetings. Delegates
later had the opportunity to test electronic polling keypads on a sample
poll that picked up a number of the questions asked of AIA Grassroots
Leadership Conference attendees earlier this year.
As is traditional, delegates also voted to extend appreciation to retiring
Board members, the host chapter and convention committees, exhibitors,
and Thompson E. and Gretchen McKellar Penney. AIA 2003 Kemper Award winner
and AIA Past President C. James Lawler, FAIA, asked to be recognized from
the floor, then called for a more demonstrative show of appreciation for
the efforts the Penneys have put forth to bring design back to the national
convention. Delegates agreed, again unanimously, and offered the Penneys
a heartfelt standing ovation.
