03/2003 Calling All Public Architects to a Special Pre-Convention Program!
 

The AIA Public Architects PIA invites all professionals who work with public-sector buildings to attend a training workshop May 7, the day before the AIA 2003 National Convention and Design Exposition, May 8–10 at the San Diego Convention Center. Attendees will earn six learning units. Register by April 11 to take advantage of the early registration fee ($320 on or before April 11/$400 thereafter).

Mike Stepner, FAIA, FAICP, former city architect for San Diego, will deliver the keynote address: “Architecture San Diego Style.” Get the inside scoop on the city’s best sites and buildings to visit. Stepner also will share his experiences in public service. Attendees will then have their choice among a series of concurrent sessions:

9:45–10:45 a.m.
• Session 1A: “Defensible Space—Dare Your Buildings to Be Safe and Attractive”
• Session 1B: “Sustainable Design—A Tale of Two Cities: The Greening of New York and Seattle,” Joyce Lee, AIA, City of New York, and Fulton "Tony" Gale III, FAIA, City of Seattle, moderated by Daniel Williams, FAIA, AIA Committee on the Environment

11:00 a.m.–noon
Session 2A: “Design-Build,” by Charles Matta, AIA
Session 2B: “Caring for the Child,” by Kevin Kelly, AIA, General Services Administration

12:30–1:30 p.m.
General Session: “Architects in the Public Eye,” by Robert Magoon, AIA, president, Magoon & Associates, and former chair, James City County (Va.) Board of Supervisors, and Dale Masin, command architect, Air Force Material Command, and Greene County (Ohio) school board member

2:00–3:00 p.m.
Session 3A: “Design Awards Programs: How to Win Them and How to Establish Them,” by Tom Grooms, AIA, General Services Administration, and David Duncan, Air Force Center for Environmental Excellence
Session 3B: “Real Estate Portfolio: How to Get the Best Deal,” by Michael O'Malley, AIA, Department of Labor

3:15–4:00 p.m.
Best Practices Trade Table

4:00–5:00 p.m.
Closing Address: “California Architecture and Its Public Schools,” by California State Architect Stephan Castellanos, FAIA
