“It is my privilege and great pleasure to roll out the red carpet
for the AIA’s annual grassroots leadership and legislative conference,”
said AIA Executive Vice President/CEO Norman L. Koonce, FAIA, setting
a tone of warm welcome that introduced the theme of “Sharing Learning
Leading” for the opening session of the 2003 Grassroots Leadership

Leadership and Diversity Through Civic Engagement
Grassroots speakers at the March 7 plenary session—Institute leaders
and Dr. Freeman Hrabrowski III, president of the University of Maryland
Baltimore Campus—advanced leadership concepts by urging attendees
to invest in their future by escalating political involvement and building
links that promote diversity in architecture and design.

Elected representatives are always looking for reality checks with their
constituents, speakers emphasized and reemphasized to the Government Affairs
Day morning plenary gathering Thursday, March 6.
Security High on List of Government Affairs
Day Concerns
Frances Halsband, FAIA, distinguished panel
debate post-9/11 directions
Grassroots attendees received two golden opportunities to learn about
and discuss security design issues on March 6. First, noted New York architect
Frances Halsband, FAIA, partner, R.M. Kliment & Frances Halsband Architects,
shared her experiences with federal-building design and offered a range
of components to be considered in creating safe and beautiful environments.
Halsband was then joined by a panel of distinguished experts for an interactive
debate on how architects can balance security with openness and aesthetics.
