ArchVoices Essay Competition
ArchVoices, a non-profit electronic newsletter about architecture education and internship, will hold its first essay competition to showcase the writing skills of individual young professionals and learn from their experiences and insights. Interns participating in the 2002 National Summit on Architectural Internship developed the theme of the competition: “How do your abilities, values, and expectations as an intern relate to those of your firm, the profession, and society? What is one specific change that could be made to architectural internship that would allow you to better demonstrate your abilities, exemplify your values, and fulfill your expectations?”

Interns, non-registered designers, architecture-school graduates, and students graduating in 2003 are eligible to submit a 500-word essay proposal by March 14. Semifinalists will be invited to develop a 2,500-word essay further exploring their ideas. A jury of Betsey Olenick Dougherty, FAIA, Dougherty + Dougherty, Newport Beach, Calif.; Kristen Richards, editor in chief, ArchNewsNow.com and OCULUS; Katherine L. Schwennsen, FAIA, 2003 AIA national vice president and associate dean of the Iowa State University College of Design; and Alex Briseno, an intern architect and editor/publisher of 306090: A Journal of Emergent Architecture + Design, will review the finalists.

Prizes include a $981 cash award (the cost of taking the Architect Registration Examination); a Macintosh iPod, compliments of Architosh; The Almanac of Architecture & Design, compliments of Greenway Consulting; and having an essay published in print and online.

RTKL Associates, the AIA Educator/Practitioner Network, Einhorn/Yaffee/Prescott, Gordon H. Chong & Partners, and Architectural Record are sponsoring the competition. For more information visit the competition Web site.
