Codes Groups Consolidate Into International Code Council
Three regional model codes groups finalized the process of creating an official unified alliance dedicated to shaping a single family of building and fire codes. On January 21, directors from the Building Officials and Code Administrators International (BOCA), International Conference of Building Officials (ICBO), and the Southern Building Code Congress International (SBCCI) signed an agreement to unite the operations of the three groups into a single organization: the International Code Council (ICC).

From Banker to Pastor to Engineer, AIA Acknowledges
Champions of the Profession

Eight named to Honorary Membership
The tenets of the AIA highlight the importance of communication and collaboration with our allies and clients throughout the building industry. One of the most important messages AIA members can share through our professional society is gratitude toward those who support and uplift architects and architecture; we can acknowledge them as part of the AIA family. In this spirit, the Institute is pleased to bestow on eight special people the title of Honorary AIA.

Officials Choose Two WTC Finalists
The Lower Manhattan Development Corporation and the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey announced February 4 that the designs created by the team known as THINK, led by architects Rafael Viñoly and Frederic Schwartz, and another by Studio Daniel Libeskind will go forward as finalists in the plans to redevelop Ground Zero. Both schemes call for towers that are taller than the original World Trade Center buildings and preserve the footprints of the original towers.

Massachusetts to Require Continuing Ed
Massachusetts approved regulations recently on mandatory continuing education (CE) for registration renewal in the commonwealth. The regulation, which has been in the works since 2000 and will affect more than 6,300 architects licensed in Massachusetts, will require 12 contact hours of CE for renewal each year, 8 of which must cover health, safety, and welfare topics. The new requirement takes effect in the registration period that begins September 1, 2003, and ends August 31, 2004. AIA Continuing Education System courses are specifically cited as meeting the commonwealth's CE standards.
