The AIA College of Fellows is pleased to announce a call for submissions for the 2003 Latrobe Fellowship. All applications must be postmarked on or before February 21, 2003. The fellowshipnamed for Benjamin Henry Latrobe, America's first professional architectsupports research that will lead to significant advances in the architecture profession. The 2003 Latrobe Fellow will receive a stipend of $100,000 for research, findings, and recommendations documented in publications, exhibitions, or educational programming that will inform, educate, and provide new insights for the architecture profession. The College of Fellows desires to create a body of knowledge for students, educators, and practitioners that promotes a deeper understanding of the current practice of architecture and provides a base for the development of new models to meet the needs of a rapidly advancing society. To that end, the College is seeking proposals from experienced researchers that will identify opportunities for change and encourage advancement of the profession. Reasons for the research are myriad. As the profession evolves at an astonishing rate, architects continually face a changing marketplace, varying levels of client sophistication, new regulations, desires for greater environmental sustainability, and evolving project delivery systems. To maintain its leadership position in the construction industry, the profession must challenge traditional practice models and seek new paradigms that facilitate the integration of rapidly changing design and construction technology, new materials, new methods, and new client and public expectations.
