AIA Baton Rouge is happy to report that three member
firms received 2002 Rose Awards for four projects. The Rose Awards recognize
members of the AIA Baton Rouge chapter for their outstanding architecture.
Projects may be residential or commercial, and may include new construction,
additions, renovations, and other construction projects. All AIA Baton
Rouge members in good standing may enter projects that were completed
since January 1, 1997.
Presentations and balloting took place at the chapter's
annual Summer Social July 16. The Rose Award recipients received their
award certificates at the AIA Louisiana headquarters building July 23.
This year's winners are:
Holly
and Smith Architects APAC, for Holy Ghost Church, a 1,000-seat Catholic
Church in historic downtown Hammond. The church also houses a 150-seat
daily chapel and an entry gathering space. The Diocese of Baton Rouge
and the congregation of Holy Ghost Church own this new building. Michael
F. Holly, AIA, served as principal in charge, Mark D. Beckers, AIA, was
project manager, and Kendal Perkins was project assistant. Stafford Construction
Company Inc. was the contractor.
Holly
and Smith Architects APAC also received a Rose Award for the Columbia
Theatre for the Performing Arts. This project is a restoration of a historic
1928 vaudeville theater into a 900-seat performance hall, plus reception
area, conference center, administrative officesall with upgraded
technical capacities. The Columbia Theatre also is located in Hammond
and is owned by Southeastern Louisiana University. Michael F. Holly, AIA,
served as principal in charge; Geoff Gjertsen, AIA, was project manager;
and Chris Bankston was project assistant. Ordak Construction was the contractor.
Chenevert
Songy Rodi Soderberg Inc., for Mockler Beverage Company's corporate headquarters
and regional distribution facility for Anheuser Busch malt beverages,
located on a 36-acre site in Baton Rouge's Industriplex Business Park.
The facility includes a new 25,000-square-foot administrative office facility
and a 90,000-square-foot warehouse distribution center. The project scope
included site selection, surveying, permitting, site design and development,
architectural design, construction documents, and construction administration.
The building is owned by the Mockler Beverage Company and was built by
MAPP Construction Inc.
Remson
and Haley Architects, APAC, for a downtown Baton Rouge Office renovation.
This project was designed to enhance the building's strengths by restoring
it not necessarily to historic correctness, but rather to the "state
of dignity it once enjoyed among its neighbors." The architects strove
to establish the building as a recognized landmark defining the edge of
Baton Rouge's downtown district. Chris and Trula Remson own the building,
and Jerry W. Boudinot LLC, was the contractor.
