On
the 80th anniversary of the dedication of the Lincoln Memorial, Commission
of Fine Arts Secretary Charles Atherton, FAIA, laid a wreath on the steps
of the historic edifice, which he called "one of the finest buildings
in the entire city" of Washington, D.C.
Throughout the day, crowds of visitors to the historic
memorial gathered to read the accompanying citation on the wreath, which
read:
In RecognitionMay 30, 2002
On this, the 80th anniversary of
The dedication of the Lincoln Memorial,
The American Institute of Architects honors
1923 AIA Gold Medalist Henry Bacon, FAIA,
And the symbol he designed of American unity
Celebrating the proposition
That all persons are created equal.
Bacon, with President Warren Harding,
Dedicated this memorial May 30, 1922.
