Eighteen projects that represent the best in New
Urbanist practice will be honored this June as the recipients of the Congress
for the New Urbanism's (CNU) second annual Charter Awards. A jury selected
the winners from a pool of more than 200 applicants representing 170 firms.
CNU's jury, which was chaired by Jonathan Barnett,
FAIA, professor of city and regional planning at the University of Pennsylvania,
evaluated these plans and projects on how they respond to and integrate
with the environment, and how they "improve the human experience
of blocks, neighborhoods, and regions." Winners represent all scales
of development and planning, and all are infill projects.
Along
with Barnett, the jury featured Elinor Bacon, president and CEO, National
Capital Revitalization Corporation; Bonnie Fisher, principal, ROMA Design
Group; Ken Greenberg, AIA, principal, Greenberg Consultants Ltd.; Alex
Krieger, FAIA, principal, Chan Krieger and Associates, and chair of the
Urban Design Program at Harvard University; John Norquist, mayor of Milwaukee;
and Richard Rosen, president of the Urban Land Institute.
