ICC Publishes Model Performance Code | |||||||||||
After five years of development, the International Code Council has released what it proudly proclaims as the "first broad-based, stand-alone model performance code in the U.S." The publication, the ICC Performance Code for Buildings and Facilities, involved the efforts of code officials, architects, designers, researchers, professional association members, and academics. The "ICC Newsletter" reports that the guide includes provisions related to structural, fire-protection, energy, and plumbing systems, as well as accessibility, emergency-responder-safety, and hazardous-materials issues. It also defines the objectives for achieving the intended outcomes regarding occupant safety, property protection, and community welfare. "Distinctly different from a prescriptive code, it allows the user to systematically achieve various solutions," the newsletter says. "It should be noted that this code still allows the use of the prescriptive building code, such as the IBC, as a design solution."
