Call for Entries: 2002 Top 10 Green Buildings

Zion National Park Visitor Center, Springdale, Utah, designed by the National Park Service, is a 2001 Top Ten Green Building. Photo by Michael Plyler. The AIA Committee on the Environment is seeking 10 buildings anywhere in the world designed by U.S. architects and completed after 1992. There is no restriction on building type and projects may be new construction or renovations.

With the generous sponsorship of the U.S. Department of Energy's Office of Building Technology, State and Community Programs, and National Renewable Energy Laboratory, the AIA/COTE Top Ten Green Projects program recognizes built projects that demonstrate the benefits of sustainable design. This can be any design approach that emphasizes high performance in the building and its systems, efficient use of resources, aesthetic appeal in context, and occupant comfort. The invited design jurists are Horst Berger, Sim Van Der Ryn, and Guy Battle.

The general categories on which each entry will be judged are:
• Design integration
• Site and ecosystems
• Community and connection
• Durability and flexibility
• Low energy and high performance
• Water conservation
• Materials
• Health and happiness
• Lessons learned.

The principle behind which the AIA COTE stands is that vitality of the natural and built environments are inseparable; the best architecture integrates the built and natural environment in a way that improves and sustains our quality of life.
