Earthquake
in Iran: A Call for Help
Search and rescue, medical relief, and emergency shelter top the
list of responses to last week’s devastating earthquake in
Bam, Iran. While these efforts go on, Architecture for Humanity,
a nonprofit agency that seeks and promotes architectural and design
solutions to global, social, and humanitarian crises, currently
is identifying relief agencies to help provide long-term transitional
housing for residents left homeless.
Institute
of Ecotourism Debuts in Sedona, Ariz.
Lee N. Christensen and Associates creates
renovated, LEED™-standard headquarters
The new, nonprofit Institute of EcoTourism (IET) is a small organization
facing a grand mission: “to help businesses, organizations,
and individuals live more rewarding lives through greater awareness
of the harmony between man and nature.” Likewise, its new
headquarters, a transformed pair of artist’s galleries in
Sedona, Ariz., is a small gem of a facility presenting a great heart
and soul to local residents and visitors alike.
Three
Kansas Architecture Firms Receive Awards for Design Excellence
AIA Kansas presented awards for excellence in architecture to three
firms at their annual conference and exhibition in Wichita last
fall. Chair Frank Harmon, FAIA, and the awards jury from North Carolina
honored Berkebile Nelson Immenschuh McDowell, Kansas City, with
three awards, and Gould Evans Associates and Junk Architects with
one each.
Farewell From 2003 AIA President Thompson
E. Penney, FAIA
Excerpts from his last speech to the AIA

2003 AIA President Thom Penney harks back to his inaugural-speech
references to the barn as a compelling metaphor for who we are.
PROJECT
WATCH
Pugh + Scarpa Scale New Heights in Silverlake
Design embraces steep hill and strict
codes, environmental concerns and residential delight
Pugh + Scarpa’s 1,800-square-foot Vail-Grant House, in Silverlake,
Calif., currently under construction, offers a happy integration
of the technical challenge posed by a steep hillside and a heartfelt,
crafted response to a very specific site. Building adjacent to a
Neutra house in this “architectonically rich neighborhood
in Los Angeles,” the architects also imbued the house with
their trademark concern for environment.
Happy
2004!
May the New Year dawn bright and offer us opportunity and power
to create healthy and beautiful environments for all.

BEST
PRACTICES (members only)
Why Put Off Till Tomorrow What Someone
Else Can Do Today?
One of the most important elements of leadership is effective delegation.
Entirely different from giving orders or, worse, dumping a task
gone bad, delegation lets people grow from your experience, builds
crucial organizational resilience, frees your time for more creative
endeavors, increases utilization rate, and gives you the benefit
of learning as you teach. If you won’t or feel you can’t
delegate—for whatever reasons—here are some suggestions
from a new book published by the American Society of Civil Engineers.
Current Trends in Professional
Liability Insurance
The annual AIA/NSPE/ACEC survey/interview of insurance carriers
shows that the market has plenty of capacity currently to handle
A/E professional liability needs. Most carriers also maintained
that deteriorating investment income and recent claims losses are
creating pressure to raise insurance rates and tighten their underwriting
policies. Read the findings of that survey, including strategies
for reducing your insurance premium.
