Search and rescue, medical relief, and emergency shelter top the list of responses to last week’s devastating earthquake in Bam, Iran. While these efforts go on, Architecture for Humanity, a nonprofit agency that seeks and promotes architectural and design solutions to global, social, and humanitarian crises, currently is identifying relief agencies to help provide long-term transitional housing for residents left homeless.

PROJECT WATCH
Pugh + Scarpa Scale New Heights in Silverlake
Design embraces steep hill and strict codes, environmental concerns and residential delight
Pugh + Scarpa’s 1,800-square-foot Vail-Grant House, in Silverlake, Calif., currently under construction, offers a happy integration of the technical challenge posed by a steep hillside and a heartfelt, crafted response to a very specific site. Building adjacent to a Neutra house in this “architectonically rich neighborhood in Los Angeles,” the architects also imbued the house with their trademark concern for environment.

BEST PRACTICES (members only)
Why Put Off Till Tomorrow What Someone Else Can Do Today?
One of the most important elements of leadership is effective delegation. Entirely different from giving orders or, worse, dumping a task gone bad, delegation lets people grow from your experience, builds crucial organizational resilience, frees your time for more creative endeavors, increases utilization rate, and gives you the benefit of learning as you teach. If you won’t or feel you can’t delegate—for whatever reasons—here are some suggestions from a new book published by the American Society of Civil Engineers.

Current Trends in Professional Liability Insurance
