This Week—Security and Design
Comments on the Seminar:
"Security by Design: Insights and Best Practices"

Following are excerpts from comments received via email about the November 5 virtual conference on security. They were overwhelmingly positive, with the exception of one member who expressed frustration over what she saw as lack of support for MAC platforms. After working with the AIA staff, she came to realize the seminar program does support MAC platforms and that her problem was software-based.

Excellent program - thanks for all your assistance.

First of all—congratulations to you and the staff for the series of programs you have designed, including the seminar on security issues today. Excellent. We had about 30 people in the Baltimore office of RTKL participating and I believe they all valued it very much.

Kudos from Wisconsin for a job well done. The comments and evaluations that I've heard/seen have been very positive about today's seminar. We had about 25 people at the Wisconsin Division of Facilities Development. While we had some technical difficulties at the start and never figured out how to vote, it was an excellent and timely continuing education program. There were several nonmember architects from state government in the crowd who were impressed with the AIA program. Perhaps they'll become members. Good job.

Just thought that I would let you know we saw this as a success!

The seminar today was GREAT—a slam-dunk according to my members who attended. They loved the technology, format, and content.

As you will see from the evaluations, a few of our members felt the whole thing was too basic and general. One-and-a-half hours just isn't enough time to get into too many specifics. The technology worked well and we would certainly participate again in something like this.
—Suzanne Schwengels, Hon. AIA
Executive Vice President
AIA Iowa

We thought the program started slowly but got much more interesting from the middle to the end. It's hard for a roomful of architects to stare at a screen with one image on it for five or 10 minutes. But they rated the program high, as you'll see on the surveys.
—Alice Sinkevitch, Hon. AIA
Executive Director
AIA Chicago

(Note: With 97 slides in a 90-minute program, two 10-minute Q & A periods, and 12 introductory slides, each program slide was on-screen for an average of 51 seconds.)

The Web conference yesterday was well received here in the heartland. The only criticism I have heard is that it covered so many issues in such a short time that it left a lot of questions unanswered. I think that a more in-depth examination of any one of the general areas addressed would make excellent follow-up learning opportunities.
