Friends, associates, and admirers of AIA Gold Medal and Topaz Medallion recipient Marcel Breuer, FAIA, gathered to celebrate the 100th birthday of the late architect. The event was held at a house in New Canaan, Conn., that Breuer designed for himself and his family. Laszlo Papp, FAIA, and the house's current owner cohosted the celebration, which included Herbert Beckhard, FAIA; Robert Gatje, FAIA; and numerous alumni of Marcel Breuer & Associates.

Breuer became well-know in his youth for the designs of Wassily and Cesca chairs. A native of Pecs, Hungary, he moved to the U.S. in 1937 to teach architecture at Harvard University and practice with Walter Gropius. In 1946, he left Harvard and established his own firm in New York City. Among other prominent buildings, Breuer designed the Whitney Museum in New York City and the UNESCO Headquarters in Paris. Breuer's houses are prime examples of mid-century American modernism. He died in New York in 1981.

His projects range from individual references to large-scale performing arts centers, including the New Jersey Performing Arts Center in Newark, which won the 2001 Bruner Award Silver Medal for Excellence in the Urban Environment. The Myers residence in Santa Barbara, completed in 1998, earned the 2002 AIA award for innovation in housing design.
