Obituary

Boyd Atkins Blackner, FAIA, died June 3 from complications from prostate cancer. He was 68.

In a tribute in the Salt Lake Tribune, Blackner's peers described him as an "architect's architect." He leaves a rich legacy in his hometown of Salt Lake City, including the "Alley Annex," winner of a 1978 AIA Honor Award. "Boyd Blackner was an exemplary practitioner who understood Modernist architecture and had the ability to translate it to fit the environment," Bill Miller, dean of the University of Utah's Graduate School of Architecture, told the Tribune. Blackner served as AIA Utah president, was a member of the Utah State Board of History, and held posts in several other community organizations. His civic awards include the "People of Vision Award" from Prevent Blindness Utah, the Community Service Award from the Salt Lake Foundation, an Honors in Arts Award from the Chamber of Commerce, and an Honorary Alumnus Award from the University of Utah.

Charles Staley, Assoc. AIA, died June 4 from stomach cancer. He was 53. Staley was the residential plans examiner for Dublin, Ohio. He was a graduate of Jefferson College, Hillsboro, Mo., and the Ohio State University of Architecture. As a member of the U.S. Marine Corps, Staley served in Vietnam. The Royal Architectural Institute of Canada (RAIC) Board of Directors conferred Honorary Membership on AIA President Gordon Chong, FAIA, and William Bevins, FAIA, president of the National Council of Architectural Registration Boards (NCARB). RAIC President Diarmuid Nash, FRAIC, presented membership certificates and the symbolic President's Medal to the honorees June 6 during the group's annual conference in Winnipeg. Manuel Barclay Galindo, president of the Federación de Colegios de Arquitectos de la República Mexicana (FCARM), also received honorary membership.

Historic preservation architect Charles A. John, AIA, was appointed county architect of Bexar, Tex., its first in its 157-year history. Bexar's county seat is in San Antonio. John's first order of business is the restoration of the 106-year-old county courthouse.

Francis J. Sheridan, AIA, director of facilities planning and development, New York Department of Correctional Services, was elected AIA Commissioner on the Commission on Accreditation for Corrections. In this capacity, he will serve on the national Board of Directors for the American Correctional Association, based in Lanham, Md. Sheridan was a juror for the Committee on Architecture for Justice 2002-03 AIA Justice Facilities Review.

Jason Smith, AIA, formed his own architecture firm, Smith Design Group, Greenville, S.C.

Dahlquist and Lutzow, Ltd., awarded scholarships to 10 Illinois high school graduates who excel in areas of pre-architectural studies and plan to pursue undergraduate studies in an accredited architecture program. Since 1997, the firm, which has offices in Hinsdale and Elgin, Ill., has provided 55 scholarships and opportunities to participate in the firm's job-shadowing program. The scholarship program is intended to support the development of architecture programs for high school students and to emphasize the societal value of the profession.

Moody•Nolan, Inc., Columbus, Ohio, received the 2002 Outstanding Indoor Sports Facilities Award for its design of the West Virginia Student Recreation Center from the National Intramural-Recreational Sports Association (NIRSA). Completed in 2001, the student recreation center is at the heart of the Morgantown, W. Va., campus. The 170,000-square-foot recreation facility includes 20,000 square feet of exercise and weight lifting equipment, aerobics facilities, an elevated walking/running track, lap and recreational pools, 50-foot-high rock climbing wall, and racquetball, volleyball, and basketball courts.

The Texas practice of Chicago-based Perkins & Will, and Dallas-based Collins/Reisenbichler Architects (CRA), announced the merger of their two offices to form Perkins & Will/CRA, a healthcare- and education-focused architecture, interior design, and planning firm. More than 85 employees will work from existing offices in Dallas and Houston. Named principals of the new firm are Tom Reisenbichler, AIA; David Collins, AIA; and Steve Milner, AIA, formerly of CRA, along with Doug Demers, AIA, and H. Wayne Cage, AIA, formerly of Perkins & Will. Phil Callison, AIA; Paul Donaldson, AIA; and Randy Hood, AIA, formerly of CRA, and Rick Polvino, formerly of Perkins & Will, were named associate principals.
