Obituary

Henry D. Mirick, FAIA, of Bryn Mawr, Pa., died of heart failure April 12. He was 96.

In 1935, Mirick formed the architecture firm Kneedler, Mirick & Zantzinger in Philadelphia. He designed corporate headquarters as well as exhibits at the Philadelphia Zoo, according to an appreciation in The Philadelphia Inquirer. For the zoo, he designed a hummingbird habitat and the Bear Mountain and African Plains exhibits. During World War II, Mirick served in the Army and was stationed at the Pentagon. He was president of AIA Philadelphia, a trustee of the National Academy of Sciences, and president of the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society. He retired in the 1980s. His wife of 63 years, Marion Winsor Mirick, died in 1996. Memorial donations may be made to Episcopal Community Services, 225 S. Third Street, PA, 19106.

Tom Frost, AIA, vice president of engineering services for Building Officials and Code Administrators International (BOCA), has been named senior vice president of technical services for the International Code Council (ICC).

Albert Dreyfuss FAIA, principal, Dreyfuss and Blackford, and former president of the AIA Central Valley Chapter (1960) in Sacramento, Calif., was recently recognized by the State of California, the Capitol Area Development Authority, and the State Assembly for more than four decades of service. Dreyfuss was commended for his voluntary leadership role as chair of the former Capitol Building and Planning Commission and its successor committee, the Capitol Area Committee. The organizations have guided the purchase and development of the state properties since 1959, resulting in the enhancement and beautification of properties surrounding the State Capitol. Dreyfuss was also recognized for public service for his leadership role in developing the American River Parkway, one of the longest urban parkways in the nation and a model for land use conservation throughout the West.

Brennan Beer Gorman/Architects and Brennan Beer Gorman/Monk Interiors (BBG-BBGM) are expanding their practices with a new office in Beijing. Partner Jeffrey Williams, AIA, will oversee the operation.

Looney Ricks Kiss Architects, Inc. (LRK) and Ferguson Smith Architects, Inc., have merged the Nashville architecture practices of the two firms. In the Nashville area, the merged firm will be known as Looney Ricks Kiss/Ferguson Smith Architects; on a national basis, the firm will continue to operate as LRK.

The Schemmer Associates Inc. and W. Boyd Jones Construction Company, both of Omaha, received the Design-Build Project of the Year for 2001 for their Airlite Plastics Company Headquarters and Production Building in Omaha. The competition was sponsored by the Design-Build Institute of America, Mid-Atlantic Chapter.
