Construction has begun on the Ogden International
Transit Center, a $4.6 million project designed by Cooper
Roberts Simonsen Architects. It will serve visitors traveling to
venues in Ogden, Utah, during the 2002 Olympic Games in Salt Lake City.
The project's deadline is December 16, just in time for the opening of
the Games. It will also serve as a depot for Greyhound and state bus service.
CRSA designed the building to fit in with the colorful, early 1900s style
of downtown Ogden.
Kapp
and Robbins of Galax, Va., received a 2001 Preservation Award from
the Preservation Alliance of Virginia (PAV) for its historic renovation
of Boykins Tavern in the Isle of Wight County. The annual award is the
highest honor given for preservation projects in Virginia.
PFAU Architecture
Ltd. of San Francisco, will design campus expansions for Lick-Wilmerding
High School in San Francisco and Marin Montessori School in Corte Madera,
Calif. Lick-Wilmerding is a nonprofit college preparatory day school that
integrates academic courses with technical and fine arts. One of the elements
of the expansion will be an energy-independent, off-the-grid student lounge
powered by windmills. At the other project, PFAU will create a Montessori
environmentone that fosters self-direction and independence in childrenand
offices, conference rooms, and a teacher's lounge.
The Skidmore, Owings,
and Merrill Foundation selected Can Tiryaki, a June 2001 urban
design graduate from Yale University, as its 2001 Urban Design Travelling
Fellow. The SOM Foundation awarded him a $7,500 fellowship for travel
that complements his studies and professional interests.
The National Council of Architectural Registration
Boards (NCARB) recently honored Alan W.T.
Baldwin Jr., AIA, with its Presidential Medal for his leadership
on the state boards of architecture and with the NCARB. He is one of the
few architects who has received gubernatorial appointments to the boards
of architecture in two different states (Maine and North Carolina). Baldwin
is managing principal, president, and chief executive of FreemanWhite
Inc., Charlotte.
The Public Relations Society of America's New York
Chapter presented Joan Capelin, Hon. AIA,
with its prestigious John W. Hill Award for her "outstanding leadership
in the practice of public relations" and her service to PRSA and
the public. Capelin's practice, Capelin Consulting, New York City, focuses
on the design and building industry.
Five RTKL architectsJohn
L. Castorina, AIA; William W. Persefield, AIA; Jerry L. Quebe, AIA; Joan
L. Suchomel, AIA; and Alan C. Wilson,
AIAhave received certification from the American College
of Health Care Architects. In addition, RTKL, of Baltimore, has announced
that it will move the base of its Eastern Region HealthSciences practice
to Washington, D.C. Vice President F. Bradford
(Rick) Drake, AIA, will spearhead the move.
Gregory Cranford,
AIA, a partner with Brennan Beer Gorman/Architects, was appointed
to the board of directors of the New York Landmarks Preservation Foundation.
Richard Landry, AIA,
of Landry Design Group, Inc., received four Gold Nugget Merit Awards in
the categories of Best Renovated, Restored Single Home or Project, and
Best Custom Home over 6,000 feet. The Gold Nugget Awards is an international
competition, cosponsored by BUILDER Magazine and the Pacific Coast Builders
Conference, that honors creative achievements in architectural design
and land-use planning for residential, commercial, and industrial projects.
It is open to 14 Western states and all countries neighboring the Pacific
Ocean.
Sandra F. Mendler,
AIA, vice president and director of sustainable design in the San
Francisco office of Hellmuth, Obata + Kassabaum Inc., was awarded with
the Sustainable Design Leadership Award from the International Interior
Design Association and C&A Floor Coverings.
Beverly Prior, AIA,
principal of Beverly Prior Architects, San Francisco, was named Small
Business Owner of the Year by the San Francisco Small Business Network.
The AIA New York Chapter of the American Institute
of Architects named Mark Strauss, AIA,
principal at Fox and Fowle Architects, vice president for public outreach.
John H. Tabor, AIA,
received Leadership North Carolina's L. Richardson Preyer Alumni Award
for his contributions to Leadership North Carolina, the Charlotte community,
and the state of North Carolina. Tabor recently returned to SCHENKELSHULTZ
Architecture as managing principal of the Charlotte office.
