"Masters of the Building Arts" Star in This Year's Folklife Festival
The Mall on the Fourth features more than fireworks

Those familiar with the Smithsonian Institution's annual Folklife Festival, held on the National Mall each summer, know that special themes run through the shows and exhibits. This year, we're happy to say, the festival's themes are "Bermuda," "New York City," and—ta da!—"Masters of the Building Arts." The "Masters of the Building Arts" program will present more than 70 artisans from a wide range of crafts—stone carvers, stone masons, brick masons, adobe builders, terra cotta artisans, ornamental metalworkers, plasterers, timber framers, and others.

Included will be some of the many artisans who crafted Washington National Cathedral, restored New York City's Grand Central Station, and built the scaffolding for the Washington Monument and the Statue of Liberty. Through demonstrations and hands-on activities, this program presents the techniques, tools, and materials of contemporary craftspeople and explores the spirit of creativity and excellence that infuses their work.

The AIA is one of the sponsors of the Smithsonian Folklife Festival, which is a free outdoor event on the National Mall in Washington, D.C. The 2001 Festival will take place from 11 a.m.–5:30 p.m., June 27 to July 1, and July 4 to July 8.
